Existing manuscripts from the IXth century document Sufi Monks from Yemen drinking coffee so they could stay awake during their meditations. According to what the codex Abd-Al-Kadir says, the tree grew wild in Abyssinia (current Ethiopia). Omar, a medicine student from Mocha, accidentally discovered the coffee tree, and thus began cultivating it and drinking the crushed bean in the Yemenite religious communities.
