MAKING ART FROM DISPOSABLE DISHES

Garcia de Pou collaborates with the School of Art and Design, Olot

Artistic sensibility is a value that has always accompanied us. As we issue an annual products catalogue, we take that opportunity to invite famous artists to create an exclusive design for the front cover, year after year, catalogue after catalogue. It’s one way of staying in touch with the cultural and artistic sphere. In Garcia de Pou we camapign for art to not be excluded from the industrial sector. Thanks to this philosophy, we can see in Spain how artistic sensibility is also present in the construction of factories and purely functional places, especially since the IXth and XXth centuries.

Often, big factories have been designed not only for productive efficiency but to also be spectacular architectural pieces. Other occasions it’s wine producers who are demonstrating their imagination by restyling their cellars into avant-garde buildings, or by linking wine and art by hosting music festivals in the vineyards. What’s clear is that we can all find examples of these links between art and industry in our surroundings… everyone is finding ways of connecting to their artistic expression.

In Garcia de Pou we are attentive to everything that we can contribute to the creative world. Now we want to share our delight in having taken part in a project lead by pupils, teachers and collaborators of the Specialization of Ephemeral Architecture of the School of Art and Design of Olot (Girona), which gained the Emporia Award 2016, National prize of Ephemeral Architecture.

The winning project was a represention an installation of big dimensions of the crowns of three Magic Kings, each of them illuminated from its interior with colour: blue, green and red. In making the crowns, they used hundreds of disposable dishes in gold, blue, green and red, hung with ribbons, on a floor coated in silver paper.

We are grateful to the inspired team that relied on us for their project: Anna Juncà, Meritxell Brugués, Anaïs Danés, David Oliva, Guillem Moliner, Jordi Bartrina, Xavier Moliner, Míriam Soler and Salvador Capellà.
